Nestled in the center of Downtown Petersburg, Hotel Petersburg resides within the city’s Courthouse Historic District, one of eight recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. The history, architecture, and people of these districts collectively tell a story that deserves to be celebrated.

PETERSBURG OLD TOWNE HISTORIC DISTRICT

Petersburg’s Old Towne Historic District is home to one of Virginia’s most diverse and historically significant collections of buildings. An eclectic mix of residential and commercial dwellings accompany Hotel Petersburg in this 250-building, 190-acre region of the city.

NORTH BATTERSEA/PRIDES FIELD HISTORIC DISTRICT

Comprised mainly of late-19th-century homes, the northern edge of this district runs along the Appomattox River.

FOLLY CASTLE HISTORIC DISTRICT

Centered around the Georgian mansion, Folly Castle, and the late 18th- and 19th-century houses surrounding it, Folly Castle includes the Gothic Revival Second Presbyterian Church, the Neoclassical old Petersburg High School, and the remains of a post-Civil War African American enclave

SOUTH MARKET STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT

This two-block-long district was home to Petersburg’s elite and includes the Thomas Wallace House, notably known for its significance in the Civil War.

POPLAR LAWN HISTORIC DISTRICT

The centerpiece of this district is the two-block public park now known as Central Park. In 2005, the district’s boundary was increased to include four areas surrounding the original district which is comprised of neighborhoods, churches, and African-American homes of the post-Reconstruction period and the Civil Rights movement.

PETERSBURG COURTHOUSE HISTORIC DISTRICT

The 1840 courthouse found at North Sycamore Street, Petersburg’s main street, is the district’s main attraction that is notoriously known for the damage incurred by the Union Army during the 1864-65 siege of Petersburg

CENTRE HILL HISTORIC DISTRICT

Named after the 1823 mansion of Robert Bolling, Centre Hill Historic District is a diverse Petersburg locality of residential buildings surrounded by commercial, industrial and municipal development.

WALNUT HILL HISTORIC DISTRICT

This largely residential neighborhood near the center of the city of Petersburg is comprised primarily of 1910s and 1920s dwellings encompassing generally Colonial Revival and Craftsman-style. The neighborhood was first subdivided in 1910 after acquisition of a nearly 250-acre farm, at one time called Walnut Hill.
